Keyboards and MIDI

Keyboards and Midi are a basis for many sound and recording studios today. With the technology available, the possibilities for creating a very in depth song are endless. A keyboard provides the user with tons of interactive programs to use. The user can select different instruments, rhythms, tempos, and even recording options. And with the computer, the keyboard can plug directly into the computer and the MIDI software will transpose what the user is playing on the keyboard onto sheet music.

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface which is a standard protocol for music between a computer and a keyboard. MIDI Version 1.0 was introduced in 1983. The difference between MIDI and a standard recorder is that MIDI does not record analog sound waves. MIDI records functions on the keyboard such as the pitch, volume, and length. The benefit of MIDI is that it is a huge space saver. Since it does not actually record sound, a MIDI file is much smaller than a regular sound file.

Another benefit MIDI provides is the ability to provide an accompaniment. When a keyboard is plugged into a computer, it can play through the keyboard a pre-written accompaniment that was written by the user. This allows the use to play more than one song at the same time. This adds a lot of depth to a song when there are more than just three instruments being played. If you can simulate and entire orchestra to play behind the song, it provides a different kind of music than was previously recorded.

Keyboards and MIDI have completely revolutionized the way that music is created today. With the special effects, easy editing, and multi-level music capabilities, keyboards and MIDI have made recording music as easy as plugging a wire into the computer. The only downfall to MIDI is that it does not recognize voice.
